Accessibility statement
How to make this website easier to use, how accessible it is, and how to tell us if something doesn’t work for you.
Calm mode
Some people find busy, colourful screens hard to look at. Calm mode makes this website quieter.
How to switch it on
Press Calm mode in the dark bar at the top of every page. On a phone it’s also at the bottom of the menu. Press it again to switch it off. Or switch it here:
What it does
- Patterns and decorative shapes are hidden.
- Big blocks of strong colour turn to soft, light colours.
- Nothing moves, fades or slides.
- Words, pictures, buttons and links stay where they are, so you can still find everything.
It remembers
Calm mode stays on for you, on this phone or computer, until you switch it off. It’s kept in your web browser. It isn’t sent to us, and it isn’t a cookie.
Settings on your phone or computer
The website also follows these settings on your device, whether or not calm mode is on.
- Reduce motion. Nothing on the website moves.
- Increase contrast. Patterns are hidden and lines are darker.
- Contrast themes on Windows. The website uses your theme’s colours and hides the patterns. Pictures keep their own colours.
- Zoom and bigger text. You can zoom in or make the text bigger in your browser. The pages rearrange to fit, so you shouldn’t need to scroll sideways.
Easy Read and visual stories
Visual stories show the real places and people before a first visit, one photo and one short line at a time. Some pages also have an Easy Read version, with one idea on each line and a picture beside it.
How accessible this website is
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. Every colour of text, buttons and links is checked against it.
